This article will review the most relevant data sources on active shooters, in order to extrapolate key details on how to prevent, react, and respond to these horrific situations with special emphasis on statistics for the armed citizen. FBI data indicate a pretty clear upward trend in active shooter events. Of these 220 incidents there are a reported number of casualties of 1,486 which includes both individuals injured and killed. Active Shooter charts are a filtered subset of the data that meets the FBI definition of an active shooter at a K-12 school which is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area. In the chart below, you will see that before gun-free zones were enacted, there were 19 active shooter incidents at K-12 schools, killing a total of 27 and injuring 105. Eleven (41%) of the 27 victims killed were students as were 76 (72%) of the injuries. A Validated Active Shooter Checklist.
