The price of oil shown is adjusted for inflation using the headline CPI and is shown by default on a logarithmic scale. The current month is updated on an hourly basis with today's latest value. Oil prices have been high, low, and everywhere in between over the years. Political, economic, and other changes have consistently rocked the oil landscape since 1948. Prices generally ranged between $2.50 and $3.00 a barrel until 1970. That's about $17 to $20 a barrel when adjusted for inflation.
